Abstract

Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube intensively display promotional content, influencer marketing, and peer posts that have the potential to normalize vaping behavior. This study aims to analyze the influence of social media exposure on perceptions and intentions to smoke e-cigarettes among adolescents and the factors that influence these changes. The method used was a systematic literature review (SLR) with the PRISMA approach, covering the screening of 1,107 articles from PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest, and ScienceDirect (2015–2025), with 17 articles meeting the inclusion criteria. The results showed that exposure to social media content, particularly advertisements and promotions from influencers, had a significant effect on reducing the perception of harm associated with e-cigarettes. The intensity of social media exposure and the type of content received contributed to adolescents' intention to try or continue using e-cigarettes, with platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube playing a major role in shaping social norms and perceptions related to vaping. These findings emphasize the importance of stricter monitoring of e-cigarette advertising on social media and the need for digital-based health education campaigns to raise adolescents' awareness of the risks of e-cigarette use. Keywords: social media exposure, electronic cigarettes, perception, intention to use, adolescents
