Menurut WHO, stroke adalah suatu tanda klinis yang berkembang cepat akibat gangguan otot fokal (atau global) dengan gejala-gejala yang berlangsung selama 24 jam atau lebiih dan dapat menyebabkan kematian tanpa adanya penyebab lain yang jelas selain vaskuler. Stroke dapat dibagi menjadi dua, yaitu stroke non hemoragik dan stroke hemoragik. Stroke non hemoragik adalah kumpulan gejala defisit neurologis akibat gangguan fungsi otak akut baik fokal maupun global yang mendadak, disebabkan oleh berkurangnya atau hilangnya aliran darah pada parenkim otak atau medulla spinalis, yang dapat disebabkan oleh penyumbatan arteri maupun vena, yang dibuktikan dengan pemeriksaan imaging dan/atau patologi.References
